A free alternative to Expedia Trip Matching

Expedia Trip Matching turns Instagram reels into bookable trips — but only in the US. Here's how it works, its limits, and a free alternative.

Reel to Trip cover: a free alternative to Expedia Trip Matching

Expedia Trip Matching is the feature that put "turn a reel into a trip" in front of millions of people — a major travel brand doing it right inside Instagram's DMs. It's genuinely clever. It's also boxed in by two things: where Expedia makes its money, and, for now, which country you live in. If you tried it and hit one of those walls, here's what it actually does and where to go instead.

What is Expedia Trip Matching?

Expedia Trip Matching is an AI feature, launched in June 2025, that turns a public Instagram reel into a bookable Expedia itinerary. You opt in by sending the hashtag #tripmatchingaccess to @Expedia on Instagram, then share a travel reel to that chat. The assistant replies with suggested hotels and activities and a rough plan, all bookable directly on Expedia.

What's a good alternative to Expedia Trip Matching?

The closest alternatives are Map Your Voyage, Wingman and Reel to Trip. Which one fits depends on the wall you hit. If Trip Matching isn't available in your country, or you'd rather not use a tool that only ever points at Expedia's own hotels, a free and worldwide option like Reel to Trip does the same reel-to-itinerary job without the booking funnel. For the whole field side by side, see our comparison of every reel-to-trip tool.

Where Expedia Trip Matching stops short

  • It's US-first. At the time of writing the feature is limited to travellers in the United States. If your account is elsewhere, you can't use it yet.
  • It reads one public reel at a time. Each reel is its own conversation, so your growing saved folder doesn't come along as a collected trip — and private saves aren't in scope at all.
  • The suggestions point at Expedia. The stays and things to do it surfaces are the ones Expedia can book. Useful if you were booking there anyway, limiting if you weren't.

Is there a free version that works outside the US?

Yes. Reel to Trip is free, needs no signup beyond your Instagram handle, and works for any destination in the world. Rather than answering one reel at a time, it merges everything you send about a place into a single trip — so a folder of saved reels about, say, Lisbon becomes one mapped, day-by-day plan instead of a dozen separate replies. And because it sells no hotels, nothing in the plan is quietly steered toward a booking. That folder-to-plan flow is the whole idea.

When Expedia is still the right call

If you're in the US, a single reel sparked the whole idea, and you want to go from inspiration to a booked hotel in one chat, Trip Matching is a short, well-built path — use it. The alternative earns its place when your trip is spread across many saved reels, when you're travelling from outside the US, or when you'd rather choose where to stay yourself before anyone shows you a price.
